Prof. Gualtiero Palareti

Gualtiero Paraleti

On August 8, Professor Gualtiero Palareti passed away after a brief illness that affected him in recent months.

He was a Professor of Cardiovascular Diseases at the University of Bologna where he graduated in 1968.

He then served as a First Level Medical Director at the Angiology and Coagulation Diseases Unit of the S. Orsola Polyclinic in Bologna, until 2002, when he became Director of the same Unit until November 2013.

His career was carried out both nationally and internationally in clinical and research activities focused on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of thromboembolism and the management of anticoagulant therapies.

He was a founding member in 1989 and later a member of the Steering Committee of the Italian Federation of Centers for Anticoagulant Monitoring (FCSA), of which he was elected president from 1994 to 2000.

Since 2002, he held the role of Expert for the Ministry of Health for the ECM Program. He was also a Co-Chairman of the SSC Scientific Subcommittee on Control of Anticoagulation of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) from 2004 to 2012 and Co-Chairman of the SSC Scientific Subcommittee on Predictive Variables in Cardiovascular Disease of ISTH from 2004 to 2006.

From 2005 until 2012, he was a member of the expert panel of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) to create the “Antithrombotic and Thrombolytic Therapy: ACCP Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines” for the “8th Edition” published in 2008 and the “9th Edition” published in Chest in 2012.

From 2006 to 2008, he was Vice-President of the Italian Society for the Study of Hemostasis and Thrombosis (SISET) and President of the same Society from 2008 to 2010.

In 2010, he promoted and coordinated the national registry “START-Register” Survey on Treated with Anticoagulants Register (Computerized Register for Collecting Data on Patients Chronically Treated with Anticoagulants).

Since November 2013, he has been the President of the Italian Association of Anticoagulated Patients (A.I.P.A) in Bologna.

In 2015, he promoted, together with A.I.P.A of Bologna, the creation of the Arianna Anticoagulation Foundation, of which he was President until his passing.

Prof. Palareti was a member of the working group on thrombosis of AIFA (thrombotic complications induced by the anti-COVID 19 vaccine).

He carried out his professional activities and scientific research with the primary goal of improving the daily clinical management of patients through the practical application of research results.
This was thanks to his human qualities of great friendliness, availability, enthusiasm, and empathy with patients and colleagues, along with his tireless and brilliant original study and research work, which he pursued with great enthusiasm until his passing.
He was involved in intensive teaching activities and as a speaker at national and international conferences.
He carried out intense teaching activities and acted as a speaker at national and international conferences, training many clinicians, and is the author of more than 420 original scientific publications in international journals.

Member of our Foundation and of the VAS International Academy of Vascular Medicine, active in education, he has also been an author in the first edition of the VAS European Book in Angiology/Vascular Medicine; his new chapter will appear in the 2nd edition of the VAS European Book, a last contribution from a great clinician and teacher.

We have lost one of our ‘giants’ and his passing leaves a great void among colleagues and those who had the honor of knowing him and working with him.
